2013 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 2,000 times in 2013. If it were a cable car, it would take about 33 trips to carry that many people.

“Being a DJ isn’t just about listening to music.  Whether a folk music troubadour or a hard metal rock head-banger, being able to share the love of a song on the radio is a creative way to express a passion for music.” -DJ Natalie

It may seem as though it wouldn’t be tough to find a song and play it on-air live but being a DJ requires a lot of communication, public relation skills and musical knowledge. At Minnesota State University Moorhead there is a radio station that is set up for students to have first-hand experience being a radio disc jockey.  Dragon Radio is made up of MSUM students and they all contribute to the promoting and entertainment for their radio signal, 1500 AM. The usual set-up of a radio station is microphones, computers, record player, cd’s, records and a telephone. When all of the equipment is set up the most essential part of being a DJ is to be personable and open to requests from the listeners.

Bringing a sense of personality is important so that listeners get to know a DJ, which could result in returning fans and more traffic on the station. College radio tends to be more relaxed with less mainstream music and more underground independent artists and bands are played. There are many mainstream radio stations in the Fargo-Moorhead area, like Froggy 99.9 FM and Y-94 on 93.7 FM. The college radio stations in Fargo-Moorhead are KMSC 1500 AM for MSUM and KNDS 96.3 FM for North Dakota State University. With the advancement of Internet, audio and video, radio stations aren’t just accessible on the radio airwaves but by searching for these radios online you will also find a live feed link to listen online. The best way to find out if being a disc jockey is the right job, join a college radio station and explore the many aspects, whether it turns out to be a positive or negative experience.

David Breitbach is a Radio DJ and Music Director for KNDS Radio on NDSU’s campus. Breitbach says, “While I can attribute a lot of music influences from my mom, dad and brother, I would have to say seventy five percent of the music I listen to now I discovered by being a radio DJ.”

When Breitbach was asked what the hardest part of being a disc jockey is Breitbach responded with, “trying to figure out a show format that I don’t get bored doing over and over is the most difficult part.” As a result of being a DJ, Breitbach has been able to expand his musical knowledge and learn essential skills to being a part of a company or organization where engaging fans and an audience is important. Breitbach goes by the DJ name, Ramblin’ Dave, and can be heard on KNDS 96.3 every Thursday from 7pm to 8pm on his radio show, Americana Alleyway.

Fusion and Folk is Fargo Moorhead’s local music blog and was created two years ago by MSUM Senior Natalie Lindberg. Fusion and Folk hosted the event, booked the bands, and did all the media throughout the day. Local bands Little Winter, Jake Ingamar and Band and Michael Pink performed at the Moorhead Radio Festival to showcase how KMSC Dragon Radio prefers to play local music.

Among the crowd in the CMU was Jon Erdahl, President of 3D Media Ventures, and also a MSUM Alumni. Erdahl is now semi- retired and has been a consultant in Radio Broadcasting for 38 years. Erdahl was a student at MSUM 1978 to 1982 and he was a KMSC Dragon DJ with an hour-long program called, “Retrospective.” Erdahl went under the DJ name, “The Lonely DJ.” At the Moorhead Radio Festival Erdahl’s daughter Rebecca played drums for Jake Ingamar and Band. After the festival Erdahl was given a tour of the KMSC Radio Station, and he shared with Dragon DJ’s stories of when he used to be behind the microphone at MSUM.

Full Interview with Jon Erdahl will be up SOON!

The Retrospective show was meant for playing any genre. Erdahl said, “I played Hendrix, this actual album right here, and if we had to go to the bathroom we played Stairway to Heaven.” Erdahl has the original KMSC Dragon Jingles and says he is going to bring them back to MSUM so they can be heard once again. Erdahl says, “I am still out there doing it, talking to kids like you guys, and going to schools giving talks and lectures about how to put together programming.” As with any social network, radio stations also don’t stay alive and current unless there is a fan base and it is publicized through various social outlets and with public relation skills.

Being able to speak to a professional in the media business and getting tips on how to succeed is crucial in a very competitive market, such as radio. Radio isn’t always heard by just turning a knob on a dial, but radio’s grown into podcasts, satellite and live feeds on the Internet. Since the 1920’s when radio was developed, the advancements have been unstoppable and will continue to grow as long as there is entertainment and news in the world.

Moorhead Radio Festival 2013…. Playlists from the past two F&F Friday’s…. Ohhhh yeah.

Ever felt like time is slipping out from under you? All of a sudden people are putting up their Christmas lights and talking about the snow that will soon be piling up on our boulevard. Get out your shovel! Fall to me means beautiful colors, cozy clothes and the last “hooray” before the winter comes.

Don’t get me wrong, I love winter. I love Christmas music and the excuse to stay inside and catch up on all my favorite tv shows. The truth of it is, is that Fargo Moorhead is a college town which means many of the people around the area are going to experience the cold for the very first time this year. Oh my! Get your parka out! I will be giving “Winter Survival Tips with Bruce” starting this week on Fusion and Folk Friday’s on KMSC Dragon Radio… make sure to tune in and beat the winter with awesome survival tips! -Natalie
